Coaches' Biographies

Head Coach - John Hayburn

John has served as the Penn Men's Lightweight coach, assistant coach to Temple Women's program, and as head coach of Malta Boat Club. Before joining Conestoga as the assistant varsity coach John was the assistant coach of Malvern Prep High School. John was made Conestoga Crew Club head coach beginning in the fall 2015 racing season.

Coach Hayburn was a national champion in the 2000 lightweight quad and he won both the lightweight quad and double titles in 2001. Hayburn was also a Canadian Henley champion, winning the 2000 lightweight quad. At the world trials in 2001, Hayburn finished third in the lightweight quad.

Hayburn graduated from La Salle University with a bachelor's in 1998 and then earned his Masters of Science of Instruction from Drexel University in 2003.

Assistant Varsity Coach - Chris Lambert

Coach Lambert currently rows out of Malta and is slowly making the transition from competitive rowing to coaching. In addition to Malta Chris has rowed for CRI, Penn AC, Vesper, GMS, and the Orlando Rowing Club.

Originally from Florida coach Lambert rowed for Bishop Moore High school, University of Central Florida and Florida Tech.

He has competed internationally at the World Championships in the 2007 U23 LM4x, 2011 LM4x, and the 2015 LM8+ winning a Bronze Medal

Assistant JV/Varsity Coach - Christopher Morris

Chris is a 1983 graduate of St. Joseph's Prep. He has a BS in Business from Rutgers University and an MBA from Cornell. Some of Chris' rowing accomplishments:

  • St. Joseph's Prep '83, four year coxswain including three year V8+ coxswain.
  • USA Junior National Team 1981 (Bulgaria), 1982 (Italy), 1983 (France)
  • Coxswain USA Jr Men's 8+. Highlight was 1982 silver medal behind West Germany.
  • Rutgers Heavyweight Mens Crew 1984-86. V8+ coxswain 1985, 1986. Co-captain 1986.
  • Rutgers Freshman Lightweight Coach 1986-87
  • Cornell University Freshman Heavyweight Coach 1988-93. Consistent IRA grand finals for 1F8+. Consistent Eastern Sprints medalist for 2F8+ including 1989 gold medal.
  • USA Junior National Team Manager 1989 (Hungary). Assistant Coach 1991(Spain).
  • LaSalle College High School 2009 Assistant coach. Freshman 8+ undefeated in Flicks with a 2nd place at Stotesbury among 45 Freshman 8+'s.
  • Conestoga Crew Club 2011 - present Part-time assistant JV/Varsity coach.

Chris is married to Sue McMonigle and has daughters Meghan (Conestoga 2011, Northwestern 2015) and Rebecca (Conestoga 2013, Pittsburg 2017). Becca was a two year rower for Conestoga.

Assistant JV/Varsity Coach - Krystal Melendez

Krystal began her rowing career at Middlebury College under head coach Noel Wanner. As a novice, she won silver in the WN8+ at New England Rowing Championships and ACRA National Championship Regatta. As a team captain her senior year, she placed seventh in the WV8+ at Dad Vail Regatta.

Krystal has also competed in multiple U23 lightweight quadruple trials as a member of GMS in Connecticut. After graduating from Middlebury, she spent a year in the elite program at GMS before moving to Philly

Head Novice Coach - Jaclyn Davison

Jackie is a 2003 graduate of Conestoga High School. She was a three year member of the crew team while at Conestoga. Her senior year she stroked the Varsity 4x to an undefeated season including a win at the USRowing Youth National Championship. Her boat was also the first Conestoga boat to travel to England and compete at Henley. After Conestoga Jackie went on to row for four years at Boston College.

After graduating from BC Jackie attended Temple Law School. While earning her J.D. she served as the Graduate Assistant Coach for the Temple Women’s Rowing Team. Since earning her J.D. she has continued to coach for several rowing programs both at the collegiate and high school level before returning to Conestoga in 2013 to take over the Novice team.

While not working with the crew team Jackie coaches CrossFit at CrossFit Village in Berwyn and runs her own dog walking business.

Assistant Novice Coach - Brian Severi

Brian is a 2006 graduate of Conestoga High School. He rowed all four years as a member of the crew team while at Conestoga. First gaining interest from his older brother Adam, who rowed for 4 years at Conestoga as well, Brian started rowing in the summer of 2001 with PA Rowing Camps.

After Conestoga, Brian attended Marist College, and in the summer, he coached competitive sailing at Surf City Yacht Club for three years. Missing coaching, Brian started filling in for Conestoga Crew coaches when needed starting in 2010. Brian spent the 2015 spring season as a part-time coach, going full-time starting in the Fall of 2015.

Brian currently rows out of Bachelors Barge Club, the same club where Conestoga Crew rows. He also currently coaches for Bachelors as well since 2016. Brian also served as a volunteer EMT-B with the Beach Haven First Aid Squad and then later with the Paoli Fire Company.
